This afternoon the global news agency Reuters broke the news that Ethiopia will be hosting COP32 in 2027 following a plenary session at Brazil’s COP30.
Each year a new country hosts the COP and selects the host city of the conference. The main advantage of being a host is the ability to set goals for the summit while showcasing their own climate issues.
The announcement settles the debate between Ethiopia and Nigeria who were both bidding to host the 2027 UN climate summit.
Back in September, Nigerian campaigners at the African Climate Summit in Addis Ababa said the strong infrastructure and simple visa process put Ethiopia in a better position to host COP32.

At the time Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie said it has “the capacity, the facilities, the location, the connectivity to host the much-anticipated climate summit.”
The country’s capital, Addis Ababa, is expected to be designated as the official host city in a speech next week.
This confirmation comes despite the remaining uncertainty about who will be hosting the conference next year, with both Australia and Turkey competing for the spot.
